Our Mission

Exceptional, individualized care for every recovery.

Our mission is to provide exceptional, individualized care to help each patient achieve their highest level of recovery and function following an upper extremity injury, illness, or surgery. We are committed to combining specialized hand therapy expertise with compassionate, one-on-one attention in a warm and welcoming environment where every patient feels supported throughout their recovery.

Services

Comprehensive upper extremity therapy under one roof.

Occupational / Hand Therapy Evaluations

On every patient’s first visit, he or she is evaluated by a CHT to determine the plan of care. Goals are discussed with each patient and a treatment program is established. Evaluations include objective measurements, fabrication of a custom orthosis as needed, a short treatment session and development of a plan of care. A home exercise program will also be reviewed with the patient.

Upper Extremity Custom Orthoses

The CHT will fabricate custom orthoses for the elbow, wrist or hand to promote, immobilize or mobilize an injured body part based on the doctor’s orders, injury type and goals. At times, a prefabricated orthosis will be fit on the patient and the patient will be instructed in a wearing schedule.

Modalities

Therapeutic modalities are treatments that cause a change to the body. They assist in the healing process of injuries. Modalities used in the therapy clinic include moist heat, ice, ultrasound and electrical stimulation. Other modalities include paraffin, fluidotherapy and contrast baths.

Edema Control Methods

After many injuries, inflammation occurs and requires attention. The simplest form of edema control is elevation. Patients may also use ice and compression garments to reduce inflammation. As needed, the therapist may provide additional techniques and medication guidance from the referring physician.

Scar Management

Post-operative scars and scars from trauma can cause restrictions in range of motion, pain and sensory changes. Patient education on scar massage may be paired with gel pads or tape to assist in scar healing.

Therapeutic Activities

Active and passive range-of-motion exercises are used in the clinic to improve movement in the upper extremity. Weights, machines and exercise equipment help improve strength following injury or disease. Activities of daily living are incorporated to promote independence, endurance and functional strength.

Sensory Re-Education

Following many upper-extremity injuries, sensation is affected. Therapy includes desensitization activities or sensory re-education to expose patients to different textures and temperatures, reduce hypersensitivity, improve tolerance to touch and help prevent further injury.

Wound Care

Wounds caused by burns, trauma, infections or surgery can be treated in the hand clinic with whirlpool baths, dressing changes, debridement and advanced techniques to assist in tissue healing. The patient is often instructed in wound care to perform at home.

HEP Instruction

Each patient is given a home exercise program determined by their diagnosis and symptoms. This may include splints, range-of-motion exercises, strengthening, scar management, edema-control methods and orthosis wear schedules.
